For nearly 27 years, Ashoka has identified and supported social entrepreneurs around the world. We have been working in the Arab region since 2003, largely centered in Egypt, but the last year has seen great strides in our effort to expand and most positively impact our region. In 5 years of operation, we have identified 37 Ashoka Fellows, including, most recently, Fellows from Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Saudi Arabia. Applying Ashoka's rigorous selection criteria and mobilizing our network of nominators, we are able to identify those individuals in our region whose innovative ideas, passion, and creativity endow them with the ability to most effectively achieve lasting social change. By connecting our Arab Fellows to the network of more than 2,000 Ashoka Fellows around the world, we are enabling system-wide changes that traverse geographic and thematic boundaries. A second important element of our program is our effort to professionalize the citizen sector in the Arab region, building the capacity of citizen organizations to effectively and sustainably recognize and respond to the needs of society. We are encouraging a culture of trust and collaboration between the citizen and private sectors, with a focus on corporate social responsibility and development-oriented philanthropy, and we are advocating the modification of current legislation that stifles the operations and impact of citizen sector organizations (CSOs). Ashoka also aims to fully engage youth in social entrepreneurship, thereby enabling an entire generation of young people, who make up a significant proportion of Arab populations, to take stock in the future of their community as empathetic, proactive agents of change. In the coming 5 years, Ashoka Arab World aims to more firmly establish itself in all corners of the Arab world, thus laying the foundations for highly visible, enduring positive change to take root throughout the region. The support of dynamic, engaged patrons, whose participation in this effort may take a variety of forms, will be fundamental to its success, and, ultimately, to our ability to achieve in the Arab region the deep impact that is our goal.
